Raytheon 5840 is a military contract 5840; USA made and is a special quality version of the EF732 pentode.

These high quality sub-miniature pentode are well known for their extremely low noise and low microphonics and are used in valve microphones. The Raytheon Company specialised in making sub minture valves and these offer great sound quality and long life.

The 5840 valve is currently used in Telefunkens current production models of the AK-47mkII and ELA M 260.

The 5840 is electrically similar to the AC701K which was used in such microphones as the Neumann M-49. They have very low noise and produce a very refined sound, hence why many manufactures are now using this valve.
