The Marshall VBA 400 Classic Retro full revalve kit is specially selected for Marshall VBA 400 bass amplifier. This kit is made up of the best sounding sets that I have found after extensively gigging my own Marshall VBA 400.

The Marshall VBA 400 has a very simple yet very effective pre amp which makes available the classic late 60ís early 70ís Marshall super bass sound right thought to more modern voiced bass sounds. So in order to get the best sound out of this amplifier we use a combination of the best of the current production and new old stock items to achieve this.

In the Pre amp section we use the following,

The Harma ECC83 Retro provides a harmonically rich and detailed sound with excellent 3 dimension midrange response. This valve has a traditional British voiced with the outstanding feature of itís smooth linear midrange response and extended frequency response so you get smooth warm midrange, Excellent clarity and tight fat punchy lows. This captures that classic vintage Marshall bass sound better than all the other ECC83/12AX7 that I have tried.

In the ECC82/12AU7 we use the new old stock Philips ECC82-5814A for very good reason. The Philips Jan Military ECC82-5814A is used as it is a special military grade valve that was with the highest grade materials and with no compromise on selection or quality control as they were for the American Government to be used in avionics. These valves have a number of unique features such as high grade filament isolation so even after long periods of use the filament will not degrade. The 5814A were designed to be immune to shock and vibration and rated for long life. This is important in the Marshall VBA 400 as filament rattle is a problem with many modern ECC82 types which do not seem to last the course.

In the Output section we use the following

The Marshall VBA 400 takes a total of 8 6550 valves in the output stage and therefore there is unfortunately no cheap shortcut when it is time for a revalve of this monster of an amp.

The Harma 6550A Retro is designed on the classic General Electric 6550A that is regarded as one of the best 6550A types made. The valve uses special thick mica with internal bracing and spacing supports with full length anode heat wings to aid cooling capacity and provide improved heat transfer. The plate is constructed out of high temperature laminated alloy with an industrial grade glass envelope to prevent microphoney. The control grid wire is made of gold with a special coated screen grid to improve reliability. The combination of these features supply a deep solid bass response with even balance a great high frequency detail. This valve supplies exceptional midrange clarity with plenty of high end definition. The bass has a deep punch and is ideal in the VBA 400 giving the amplifier a true vintage voice. This is the best current production 6550A and gives the sound you would expect from a high grade bass amp.

We vigorously test and dual matched and this set is a specially selected set of 8 off 6550A identically matched for use in the Marshall VBA 400 bass amps.

The set consists of 12 valves

3 Specially Gain selected Harma ECC83 Retro in V1, V2, & V4
1 Specially Gain selected Philips ECC82-5814A in V3
8 Selected and matched 6550A Harma Retro in a matched Octet.
