The Harma STR 5881 Cryo Upgrade kit is designed to give you the best balance of clean headroom and crunchy fat overdrive sound when the amp is pushed.
This kit has been designed for the Metal, Hard Rock, and Grunge and Fusion styles of music and offers a number of advantages over the standard 6L6GC types. It will give your Mesa rectifier more clarity, smooth warm overdrive with tight fat punchy lows.
The Harma ECC83 STR Cryo is used as it has a number of advantages over other 12AX7 types such as reduced microphonics and better isolation from vibration. This is particularly useful in High gain circuits and combo applications. The valve is very well balanced with nice even bass which has plenty of depth. The cryo treatment enhances the high end treble giving a smooth linear response. The treatment gives the valve an extended frequency response so you get smooth warm and punchy midrange with excellent clarity and tight fat punchy lows. The Cryo treatment also improves the valves overdriven characteristics providing a clear sustaining lead sound. This removes the mush and fizz that happens when Boogies are overdriven.
The Harma 5881 Cryo is the button based Russian military valve which is the same valve that powered the Mesa Boogie amps (STR 425) in the late eighties. This valve has bullet proof reliability and proven track record over decades of use in Russian military applications.
The 5881 Cryo enhances the sound in a number of ways over the standard 5881 valve and removes the midrange mushiness and flabby bass associated with the Chinese made STR-440.
The Harma 5881 Cryo has a tight and dynamic lead sound with solo's having a punchy and clear attack. The treble response has much more clarity and detail with more percussive upper mid attack. The valve also has a clearer midrange with a tighter more fluid bass response. The valve overall has more dynamics and a more musical response.
The overdriven sound is warm and well balanced with excellent note definition.
This will particularly suit fast players or music such as metal than involves extreme riffing. The top end has more smoothness than the standard item and this is a real benefit as some models can have an overly hard and bright treble. The 5881 is quite lean in this department in standard format. The good thing about the Cryo 5881 is that it maintains this leanness but just adds more clarity, thus making ideal for use in High gain circuits for Metal, Rock, Grunge and Fusion styles.
