Laney make some very fine sounding amplifiers. The stock speaker in most of the early amplifiers was their own H/H invader. This speaker range, to put it politely never enhanced the amplifiers sound quality. We have a included the most popular upgrades of valves and speakers that we have made to Laneys over the past 10 years.
The Laney VC30 is a classic Vox sounding combo that provides a nice mix of vintage and modern sounds. The Early versions were fitted with poor H/H invader speaker which really lets this amp down. This Laney Combo offers excellent performance which is comparable with many combos costing twice as much once the valves and speaker have been upgraded.

The Harma STR ECC83 is used as it has the most neutral and clear vintage tone of all the current production ECC83/12AX7 types. The Harma ECC83 -STR construction is based on the famous frame grid design which has a number of advantages over regular ECC83, such as reduced microphonics and better isolation from vibration. This is particularly useful in combo applications. The valve is very well balanced with nice even bass which has plenty of depth. The mid-range response is very transparent with a clear sparkling top end which perfectly complements the Laney.

The Harma EL84/E84L is chosen as it has the best clean sound out of any modern EL84.In clean mode the valve has a well-balanced sound with a deep solid bass. The valve breaks up later than many others and in overdriven conditions results in a clearly defined creamy distortion. These characteristics make this our most popular EL84 in the Laney amplifiers.

For the speaker we use the following,

The Harma Classic Ruby 50H 12 inch 50 watt guitar speaker combines the open top end chime and harmonic mids of the Original 1960’s Vox blue with a tight low end and the added bite of a ceramic magnet. The result is speaker that will make your chords shimmer and sparkle, your lead sound sustain with vintage harmonic warmth and the most desirable bottom end in the business which is rounded and extremely tight.

Here is what Ben Butterworth said after fitting the Classic Ruby in his Combo.

“The amp really sparkles on the clean channel, the crunch and overdrive channels are warmer and better defined, both in terms of tone and note definition. There’s also another phenomenon which is hard to describe, the amp isn’t louder, but it somehow has a real presence now. The red chassis also happens to look the b*llocks.”

The upgrade kit consists of the following,

3 Selected Harma ECC83-STR
4 Selected and matched Harma E84L
1 Harma G12 Classic Ruby 50 watt speaker 8 Ohm.
